Brushes
Brushes is an essential part of any artist's equipment. brushes come in many different shapes and sizes and vary in quality.
Brushes are made from natural hair or bristle, synthetic fibre, or a mixture of both Generally, natural hair (sable) brushes a best for watercolours, natural bristle (hog) brushes for oils, and synthetic brushes for acrylic. Use small and medium sized short, flat hair brushes for general painting, and small, round brushes for fine detail. Try out other shapes of brushes and select those you find easiest to work with. Explore the different properties slowly, and do not buy too many at first.
Artists' brushes are usually given numbered sizes, although there is no exact standard for their physical dimensions. From smallest to largest, the sizes are:
10/0, 7/0 (also written 0000000), 6/0, 5/0, 4/0, 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30. Brushes as fine as 30/0 are manufactured by major companies, but are not a common size. (Sizes 000 to 20 are most common). >> brush styles
Care & cleaning of brushes It is important for all artists to take care of their tools. Brushes in particular can last a lifetime if they are of the right quality and are cared for properly.
